Dunked, Dried, and Deciding: The Five-Minute Triage Every Water-Damaged iPhone Owner Needs

It happens in slow motion. The pint tips, the toilet claims another victim, or the washing machine door closes with your iPhone still in the pocket of your jeans. Panic sets in, followed almost immediately by the question that really matters: is this phone worth saving, or is it a write-off?

Most guides will tell you to put it in rice and hope for the best. That's not a guide — that's a superstition. Here's what you should actually be doing in the first few minutes, and how to work out whether a repair makes financial sense.

First Things First: Power It Down, Not Up

The single worst thing you can do with a wet iPhone is charge it or try to switch it on. Electricity and moisture make a miserable couple — short circuits happen in seconds, and they're what turn a £60 rescue job into a £400 motherboard rebuild.

Power it off, wipe off the surface water, and leave it alone. Resist the urge to check whether it still works. It probably does, right now — the damage happens when corroded connections are given power.

Read the Liquid Contact Indicators

Every iPhone since the 3G has carried small Liquid Contact Indicators (LCIs) — tiny white or silver strips inside the SIM tray slot and, on older models, inside the charging port. Pop a SIM tool in, slide the tray out, and shine a torch inside the slot.

The LCI doesn't tell you how bad the damage is — a splash and a full submersion both trigger it — but it settles any argument about what happened, which matters when you're talking to a repair shop or a warranty provider.

The Rice Myth, Busted Once and For All

We'll say it plainly: rice does almost nothing. A bowl of dried basmati is a poor desiccant compared to proper silica gel packets, and the starch dust from rice can work its way into ports and do its own damage. Apple itself now advises against it.

What actually helps: airflow, low heat, and time. Stand the phone upright in a warm, dry room — an airing cupboard is the very British version of perfection — and give it 48 hours minimum. If you have silica gel sachets left over from a parcel or a new handbag, seal the phone in a bag with them instead.

The Cost Reality: What UK Repairs Should Run You

Once the phone has dried out and you know whether it powers on, you can price the salvage. As a rough guide for independent UK repair shops (not Apple's official rates):

Water damage rarely announces itself neatly. Corrosion creeps across the logic board over weeks, so a phone that seems fine today can die a fortnight later. Any honest repair shop will tell you liquid damage work comes with no guarantees.

The Decision: Rescue or Scrap?

Here's the simple arithmetic we use:

Save it when: the phone powers on, the LCI damage seems minor, and the fix is a screen or battery costing under roughly a third of the phone's current resale value. A three-year-old iPhone needing £120 of work to run another two years is a good deal.

Let it go when: the repair quote approaches or exceeds the phone's second-hand value, or a shop recommends motherboard work on a device worth £200. At that point you're paying to repair something you could replace for the same money — with a warranty and no hidden corrosion timebomb.

The middle ground — a £400 logic board rebuild on a £250 phone — only makes sense if the device holds irreplaceable data and you haven't got a backup. Which, of course, is the real lesson: back up tonight, because the washing machine doesn't check your iCloud settings first.
